James Marienthal 2001 Update
James writes:
I was just recently (8/10/01) married for the second time. My wife’s name is Rebecca and we are headed to Amsterdam and the fjordlands of Norway in September ’01 for our honeymoon. I have two children from my first marriage. Jacob is 19 and a junior at Tulane engineering school. He does quite well in school and will likely soon get the college degree I never had. Alex is 14 and a freshman at Boulder high.
For the past 15 years I have been the owner of a record company called Silver Wave Records that I started in 1986. It has been a wild ride learning the music business, but I have been fortunate enough to have a fair amount of success at it. You can read the article in the Boulder paper that tells a little more about it.
From 1974 to 1991, I lived in a mountain town outside of Boulder called Gold Hill. For 8 of those years I ran the local general store and lived a “chop wood, carry water” type of lifestyle. Since then, I’ve lived in a quiet neighborhood in central Boulder and manage to avoid most of the crazy development all around the outskirts of town. In spite of all that, it’s a great place to live.
One of my sidelines is programming jazz and world music as a volunteer DJ once a month at Boulder’s public radio station KGNU. That, and concerts and music festivals keeps my appetite for new music satisfied.
Another big part of my life is telemark and back-country skiing every winter. I’ve been to most of the back-country huts in Colorado, and a few in other places. Barry Oreck [FWP ’72] comes out from New York almost every winter to join in on a hut trip.
Besides running his company, James produces records also plays piano on some of the albums.
